For the past several years, I’ve been making my way through Wikipedia’s “List of girl groups”, listening to every discography of every artist. Pop music is the gift that keeps on giving and what I’ve gotten are some of the best songs in the world and some of the absolute strangest.

Most music is boring!!!! Sorry to say it, but most music is boring and your favorite bands are probably boring too!!!!! But every once in a while, after hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of listening, you find a song that is truly great. And if you’re lucky, you’ll find a song that in equal measure is truly terrible. These moments are life-affirming.

The girl groups listening journey is fun because the only thing that these acts on this list have in common is that they’re girl groups. Not from the same decade or the same country, not even recording in the same genre. And you would think, as an American who loves music, that you’ve heard it all. But if you can listen, learn, and grow and be so brave and strong and such a good person and remember that there are other countries in the world — other countries that love and create music — your chances of finding the next best song you’ve ever heard grow exponentially.

So that’s what this show is really about. Being brave and strong and such a good person.
